Modern Comb Over Championship

Overview

Precision meets modern style in this technical barbering category. Competitors are challenged to execute a clean, structured comb-over across a range of hair textures while maintaining balance, flow, and a polished finish. This competition highlights foundational barbering skills with a modern edge—focusing on control, detail, and wearability.

Eligibility

• Open to all barbers and stylists
• Models must have natural hair with no pre-cut shaping
• Hair must be clean and dry or lightly damp
• No pre-defined parts or prior cutting allowed
• Suitable for all hair textures (straight, wavy, curly)

Rules

• 40 minutes total to complete the look

• 30 minutes: haircut and shaping

• 5 minutes: styling

• 5 minutes: finishing and enhancements
  • Must create a modern comb-over style
  • Must include:

• Defined side part or natural directional part

• Visible comb movement and flow

• Controlled volume

• Balanced taper or fade
  • Style must be clean, wearable, and modern
  • Extreme or overly artistic styles are not permitted

Enhancements Policy

Enhancements are allowed with limitations.

Permitted:
• Hair fibers
• Hairline spray
• Color enhancements
• Styling powders
• Finishing sprays

Guidelines:
• Enhancements may only be applied during the final 5 minutes
• Cannot be used to conceal poor technique
• Haircut structure must remain visible to judges

Judging Criteria (100 Points Total)

Precision Cutting (30 points)
• Clean sectioning and accuracy
• Balanced weight distribution
• Sharp, intentional cutting techniques

Blending & Taper (20 points)
• Smooth transitions between lengths
• Clean fade or taper execution
• No visible lines or inconsistencies

Part Definition & Direction (20 points)
• Clearly defined part line
• Consistent comb direction and flow
• Structure supports overall style

Styling Control (15 points)
• Controlled volume and shape
• Clean, intentional styling
• No flyaways or unfinished areas

Grooming Finish (10 points)
• Polished, barbershop-ready look
• Clean neckline and edges
• Overall presentation

Enhancement Use (5 points)
• Subtle and professional application
• Enhances—not overpowers—the haircut

Disqualifications

Competitors may be disqualified for:
• Pre-cut or pre-shaped hair
• Use of non-approved tools or products
• Excessive or misleading enhancements
• Failure to produce a comb-over style

Stage Presentation

• Clean neckline and finished edges
• Defined comb direction visible from all angles
• Controlled, polished styling
• Model will be presented in a full 360° turn for judging
